Biblical Basis for The Tri-Unity of God
Definition of the Trinity (Triunity) of God Trinity: Webster’s dictionary gives the following definition of trinity: “The union of three divine persons (or hypostases), the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, in one divinity, so that all the three are one God as to substance, but three Persons (or hypostases as to individuality).” Synonyms sometimes used are triunity, trine, triality. The term “trinity” is formed from “tri,” three, and “nity,” unity. Triunity is a better term than “trinity” because it better expresses the idea of three in one. God is three in one. Hypostases is the plural of hypostasis which means “the substance, the underlying reality, or essence.” "Within the one Being that is God, there exists eternally three coequal persons, namely, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit." (TFT, p. 26)
A. There is only One God (Deuteronomy 6:4). For There are three that bear witness record in heaven, the Father, the Word (Son (John 1:1, 14)), and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. (1 John 5:7) B. Three Persons Are Called God 1. The Father is God (Romans 1:7; Galatians 1:1; Matthew 6:9). 2. The Son is God (Isaiah 9:6; Psalms 110:1; Hebrews 1:8; Zech. 12:10; John 8:58, Mark 2:5-7; John 5:23; Colossians 2:9; Titus 2:13; ) 3. The Holy Spirit is God a. He has the attributes of God (eternal – Hebrew 9:14; Omnipresence – Psalms 139:7; Omniscience -1 Corinthian 2:11; holiness – Ephesians 4:30;) c. He performs the acts of God (creating – Genesis 1:2; Psalms 104:30; redeeming – Ephesians 4:30; doing miracles – Hebrews 2:4; giving Supernatural gifts – 1 Corinthians 12:4-11;) d. He is associated with God in benedictions (2 Corinthians 13:14) e. He is associated with God in prayers (Jude 1:20). f. He has all the glory of God (2 Corinthians 3:18). C. All Three are Distinct Persons Person = one with a mind, will , and feeling (He can think, choose, and feel). 1. The Father is a Person a. He has a mind (Matthew 6:32). b. He can choose (Matthew 6:9-10). c. He can feel (Genesis 6:6). 2. The Son is a Person a. He has a mind (John 2:25). b. He can choose (John 10:18). c. He can feel (John 11:35). 3. The Holy Spirit is a Person a. He has a mind (John 14:26). b. He can choose (1 Corinthians 12:11). c. He can feel (Ephesians 4:30). D.
